Berkshire VINELink Coverage Limits
The official Massachusetts locator page states that only the Massachusetts Department of Correction participates in VINE. This means VINELink is a current state-prison custody and notification channel. It is not a Berkshire County Jail and House of Correction roster, and it does not reach the Regional Lock-Up or the municipal police holding sites in Pittsfield, Dalton, Lee, North Adams, Adams, Williamstown, and Great Barrington.
The distinction controls what a no-result means. Someone missing from VINELink may still be in Berkshire sheriff custody, a police hold, federal pretrial custody, BOP custody, or ICE detention. The name may also be misspelled, the state record may not yet be posted, or the person may have left MA DOC. None of those outcomes can be selected from a blank search alone.

The state page directs a user to VINELink for a person housed in a Massachusetts prison, while Berkshire sheriff records remain with BCSO.
Search One Berkshire DOC Inmate
Search only after confirming that MA DOC is the likely custodian. A Berkshire defendant can be sentenced or transferred to a state prison outside the county even though no state prison is located in Berkshire County. Use the full first and last name or the MA DOC commitment number. The commitment number is the stronger input when available because common names and spelling variants can create false matches.
- Open VINELink and choose Massachusetts.
- Select the person or custody search shown by the current interface.
- Enter the complete first and last name or MA DOC commitment number.
- Compare all available identifying details before opening a record.
- Read the custody, location, and event fields exactly as displayed.
- If no record appears, call VINE at 866-277-7477 or contact MA DOC. Do not infer discharge.
- If the person was held by BCSO, stop using VINE and contact the sheriff instead.
VINELink is best used for a known person, not for browsing all Berkshire County releases. The statewide Cross-Tracking and releases dashboards are aggregate tools and do not provide named histories. When a former state prisoner no longer appears, a DOC release or sentence record and the sentencing-court docket provide the durable trail.
Note: Compare identifiers before acting on an alert because a name-only match can point to a different person in state custody.
Berkshire VINELink Release Fields
No official Massachusetts source reviewed promises a fixed released-result screen, mugshot, projected-discharge field, or post-release display period. The current interface may show custody and event details for a matched MA DOC record, but its exact labels must be read as presented. Do not convert a missing field into a presumed date.

The MA DOC glossary separates a sentence-based Release Date, an Earliest Release Date, and an Actual Release Date. VINELink is not promised to show all of those fields. If a precise historical date is needed, ask DOC for the Certificate of Discharge/Release and sentence-computation record.

Register Berkshire Release Alerts
Notification registration begins only after the correct MA DOC record has been found. The current interface may ask the user to create or sign into a VINE account. Available methods include telephone, SMS, email, and in-app notices. Choose the event and contact methods offered for that record, then review the registration before finishing.
- Open the correct person's MA DOC record and select its notification or registration action.
- Create or sign into a VINE account if the current interface asks for one.
- Select phone, text, email, or in-app contact methods and enter current contact details.
- For telephone calls, create and retain a four-digit PIN.
- Review the event choices and complete any confirmation shown by the current interface.
- When a phone alert arrives, enter the PIN to confirm receipt and stop repeat calls.
If no one answers a phone notification, VINE leaves a message and continues call attempts for at least 24 hours. Text and email alerts do not use the phone PIN. The vendor material does not promise a separate email-confirmation step, so the safe instruction is to complete whatever confirmation the live interface displays. Multiple phone numbers or email addresses may be registered.
An alert is timely notice, not a release certificate. Confirm an important event with MA DOC because a person may face another sentence, a warrant, a detainer, or a transfer after leaving one status.
Berkshire Sheriff Release Verification
For the Berkshire County Jail and House of Correction, use BCSO rather than VINELink. Call 413-443-7220 and ask whether the named person remains in Berkshire custody. If the person has left and the office can disclose more, ask for the actual release date, coded release type, and destination. A transfer to MA DOC, another sheriff, a warrant-holding agency, federal authority, or immigration authority ends Berkshire custody but is not a community release.

A focused request should identify the person and date range and ask for the booking and release entry, release type, and transfer destination. Note: A court release order authorizes release, but the custodian's entry is the better source for the actual processing date and destination.
Berkshire Victim Notification Route
Massachusetts also operates an eligibility-based Victim Notification Registry, or VNR. It is separate from general VINELink registration. Eligible victims and affected persons may apply for advance notice of temporary, provisional, or final release, movement to less secure custody, or escape. The application requires the supporting documentation described by the state and can be routed through the state or an advocate.
The Berkshire District Attorney's Victim Advocate provides a local application path for eligible victims, survivors, and witnesses seeking notice about bail release, classification, parole, or sentence completion. This service is restricted notification. It is not a public Berkshire County inmate lookup, and it does not turn BCSO into a VINE participant.
Use the state VNR registration route for its eligibility and document rules, or the Berkshire DA application path for local assistance. The narrow Massachusetts VINE coverage makes this county layer especially important for an eligible applicant, but the actual release still should be verified with the holding agency.
Berkshire Release Systems Compared
Each custody level has its own source. VINELink covers MA DOC in Massachusetts. BCSO controls Berkshire jail records. Municipal police control their short-hold booking records until a person enters sheriff custody. The BOP locator handles federal sentenced custody and can display historical release dates. ICE's locator concerns current and some recent immigration detention, while the U.S. Marshals Service has no public name-based historical release locator.

The Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry is another separate system. It applies only to qualifying classified registrants and does not prove the date or type of release. A registry result should never replace the custodian's release record.
Confirm Berkshire VINELink Notices
A reliable confirmation links three facts: identity, custody event, and legal basis. First match the MA DOC commitment number or other sound identifier. Next obtain the actual release or transfer entry from DOC. Then read the sentencing docket, parole decision, or other legal record that explains the event. This sequence avoids treating an automated status change as the whole case history.
